A noisy, churning air conditioning unit is annoying to say the least! That constant buzz can really start to do your head in, particularly if you work from home, or if you have it on while you are trying to have a nap. You should be alarmed for a different reason too though – if it is making more noise than it should, then the chances are that there is something wrong in the system somewhere. This needs to be looked at and fixed, because if it is ignored the problems will only get worse, and the unit will deteriorate, maybe even breaking down altogether. So don’t bury your head in the sand, face the noise head on and get it sorted. Here are some of the reasons your air conditioning unit may be making a racket:
A Noisy Fan
If the fan within the air conditioning system is dirty, it will start to make a noise as it rotates. Combat this by making sure it is cleaned and maintained regularly. If they rattle, they might need to be tightened up. It’s pretty easy to do this sort of thing yourself. Just open the unit up, find the fan and give it a good clean. Check for foreign objects that might have made their way in, and remove them. If the blade needs tightening, then you can do this yourself with an Allen key or a screwdriver. If there are any bends in the blade then this may be the source of the noise, so try and bend them back into shape very gently.
Loose Fittings
If a screw is loose somewhere then the fitting may rattle as the air conditioning unit works away. The vibrations of the unit itself mean that it’s quite easy for screws to come loose, and in some cases fall out altogether. Luckily this is very easy to fix yourself with a standard screwdriver, and it won’t cost you a penny in call-out charges either! Check the unit over thoroughly for signs of loose screws, and you may well source and fix the problem quickly and easily.
A Bit of Maintenance
Your air conditioning unit needs regular maintenance and if you have neglected it, then it might be noisy because it is having a grumble about being unloved! Replace the filter regularly and clean the inside and the outside of the unit out. You can even use a vacuum cleaner to get into all the little nooks and crannies. You should get it professionally maintained at least once a year so that you are confident that everything is as it should be. The company that installed it will be happy to visit from time to time to carry out routine maintenance tasks. It’s a lot cheaper than waiting for it to break down altogether.
Look after your air conditioning unit and it will definitely look after you. Spending a little money on regular care and maintenance will more than likely mean that you won’t be faced with a massive bill when the thing breaks down entirely.
