Anyone who has a loft knows that it can sometimes be a bit of a pain getting in and out, and is normally full of clutter that you don’t use and haven’t seen for several years. You always end up tripping over things, and find that certain areas don’t look safe to use.
It is important to make sure that your loft is easy to access and works well for you in order for it to do its job. So, let us take a look at some of the key things you should be considering when it comes to your loft.
Improve The Entrance
Some people find that getting into the loft in the first place is by no means an easy task. Some lofts come with their own pull down ladder, but some people have to use a separate ladder which can be quite hazardous. Pull down ladders are better as they are directly attached to the loft so is more stable plus they are stored out of harm’s way when they are not in use.
You should also think about the size of the entrance itself. A lot of older loft spaces tend to have a very narrow entrance, making it impossible to move things into it, including people! If possible you should expand the size of the entrance that is big enough for you and a few key items to get through but small enough to give you more floor space.
Be Smart With Storage
Many lofts are full to the roof of old tat that no one uses anymore and has been unseen for several years. Some people find themselves tripping up over old toys and falling into piles of newspapers. The best thing you could do to prevent this is to store things more wisely. This could be just a case of throwing away rubbish and piling things into categories, but the better solution is to use storage boxes and cupboards. That way you can label where everything is, and it can help to give you more floor space and space in general which you can play around with as you please.
Check The Stability
Stability is everything when it comes to a loft as poor stability can cause major accidents in more ways than one. All the supporting beams should stay exposed so that any cracks or damage can be seen in an instant. The floorboards should be sturdy enough to take a little bit of weight as it needs to carry both you and whatever else you put in there. If you spot any minor problems you need to deal with is as soon as possible as things could turn nasty if it is ignored.
Some of the more common problems to look out for are woodworm, rotting and any areas of damp.
Confirm Its Purpose
It is not ideal for your loft to be multi-purpose as this can make things slightly confusing and rather impractical. You don’t want to have a hang out spot surrounded by piles upon piles of bits and bobs. Common ideas include storing spare belongings, using it as a hang out area or using it as a mini library. You would have a bed in the kitchen, so there is no need to use the space for more than one thing at a time.
