Tips and Tools for Mowing Your Lawn

Tips and Tools for Mowing Your Lawn 1

Doing things yourself gives you great pleasure, confidence and peace of mind since you can ensure that the job is done perfectly. If the job is something related to a hobby or to beauty and design – which fascinates many people – doing it yourself will give you boundless pleasure.

The lawn is an extension of your home and it’s not meant to simply be a yard. Rather, taking care of it and making a plan to design it consistently with your home will make your home looking marvelous. However, although the lawn is an extension of the overall design and beauty of your home, it requires a lot of maintenance to keep beautiful. And, since it is largely connected with the overall consistency and beauty of your home, this is something you don’t want to compromise on! But hiring a professional to maintain your lawn would cost a lot since it is a technical task.

What if you can do it by yourself? This is not like inventing a rocket or navigating a spaceship; you can do it by following a few precise tips. Just follow the instructions discussed here, and you will be a professional lawn maintainer for your own lawn!

Fertilizing the Soil

Tips and Tools for Mowing Your Lawn 2

First, take a look at the mistakes that people make frequently. A common misunderstanding is that if you fertilize the soil frequently, then it will produce trees and grass quickly. In some cases, this technique works. But, if you do it too often, it can lead to disaster. Frequent fertilization will destroy many insects which help the plants to grow naturally.

Trimming Plants and Grass

Tips and Tools for Mowing Your Lawn 3

While trimming plants, grass or tree leaves, make sure that you are leaving at least 3 ½ or 4 inches. This is because this portion is the healthier portion. If you cut too short, it will prevent shading out of the weeds as well as sprouting which will cause the soil to be cold. Moreover, this helps microbes to grow and expand in the soil which are also healthy for the soil.

To make sure that your mowing is working well, regularly sharpen your mower’s blades. Usually, after ten hours of use, the blades perform less effectively. Dull blades won’t mow the lawn properly and will leave ugly cut edges.

Avoid Mowing by Calendar

If you decide your mowing times by calendar, give up this habit. You should mow your lawn according to the grass length, not the date. Try to bring variation in the mowing patterns. This means that while you’re mowing the lawn, you should mow the grass and trim other plants in different directions and paths. This will help the grass grow more upright.

If the grass is wet, don’t mow it. Cutting wet grass causes uneven shape and edges.

Lawn Mowers

Lawn mowers are usually of two kinds: rotary mowers and reel mowers.

Rotary Mowers:

Rotary mowers are more frequently used and are usually found in electrical mechanisms. Their blades cut the grass in a horizontal, spinning motion which chops off the top of the grass.

Reel Mowers:

Tips and Tools for Mowing Your Lawn 5

Above: “Reel mowers, also called cylinder mowers (familiar as the hand-pushed or self-powered cylinder lawn mower), have a horizontally rotating cylindrical reel composed of helical blades, each of which in turn runs past a horizontal cutter-bar, producing a continuous scissor action. The bar is held at an adjustable level just above the ground and the reel runs at a speed dependent on the forward movement speed of the machine, driven by wheels running on the ground. The cut grass may be gathered in a collection bin.

This type of mower is used to produce consistently short and even grass on bowling greens, lawns, parks and sports grounds. When pulled by a tractor (or formerly by a horse), these mowers are often ganged into sets of three, five or more, to form a gang mower. A well-designed reel mower can cut quite tangled and thick tall grass, but this type works best on fairly short, upright vegetation, as taller vegetation tends to be rolled flat rather than cut.” Photo and Information Courtesy: Steven Depolo

On the other hand, reel mowers are much less common, almost obsolete. They need to be operated by pushing forward. Since they require much effort and power, they are not suitable for bigger lawns. Rather, a yard or lawn with a smaller area is perfect for them.

Lawn Mowing Tools

Aside from these, there are several other lawn mowing tools such as string trimmers, edgers, blowers, rakes, push type spreaders, sprayers, de-thatches, and aerators.

String Trimmer:

A string trimmer is a handheld device which is powered by electricity or gas or oil which helps the user in trimming the grass around buildings, flowerbeds and fences.

Edgers:

Edgers are much like trimmers except that they have vertical cutting heads.

Push-type Spread Erasers:

Push-type spread erasers are useful for fertilizing and spreading seeds and pesticides.

Blowers:

Blowers provide airflow to the grass for advanced nurturing.

Rakes:

Rakes are fan-style tools which let you inexpensively remove debris, thatch or leaves from the lawn.

Nonetheless, if you are not confident enough to mow your lawn by yourself, you can hire lawn mowing professional teams. There are several lawn care companies who provide lawn mowing services to optimize your home and lawn perfectly.

Outdoor Play Areas Made Simple

If you are fortunate enough to have a decent sized garden, you may be thinking about adding some entertainment features for your children. It is so important for them to have a space to let loose and have some good healthy fun.

This article looks at a few suggestions that may help you to design a safe play area that your kids will love!

Make A List

Outdoor Play Areas Made Simple 2

All great creations begin with a piece of paper and a pen, and this is no exception. You should write down exactly what it is that you want to include in your play area. Your kids will be the source for this vital information; do not buy and install a piece of equipment without their approval!

Your kids’ age will be an important factor in these choices, because a skateboard ramp will be cool for teenagers, but not so great for your four year old toddler.

Costs

You should think about what funds are available to you before asking for your kids to go out and choose their constructions. There can be nothing worse than trying to explain to a teary eyed eight year old that they can’t have that jungle gym you promised them last week. You can still have a great amusement area if you plan wisely.

Space

The size of your garden will dictate what type of equipment you can install. Do not try and pack as many items as you can in a small space; they will be dangerous and your garden will look silly. Calculate the size of the chosen items and see if they will fit comfortably into your available space. You can experiment with the arrangements until you are happy with the overall positions. You should always bear the safety factor in mind – like not having a slide situated right next to a swing area.

Pathway

Try to construct a pathway that allows your kids to walk around the equipment without any potential accidents. Try and construct the site in a part of your garden that offers some cool shade during the day.

Rubber Flooring

This is an absolute must when it comes to the safety factor because your kids will fall off the bars at some point and concrete is not a good place to land. The rubber sheeting is not cheap and needs to be high quality; factor this into your budget before choosing that expensive set of monkey bars.

Maintenance

Once your garden play area has been built, you will need to supervise the activities, especially if the kids are less than ten years old. You should check the equipment regularly for any loose fittings or sharp edges. They are generally very soundly built, but your kids will put the equipment through some punishing treatment.

Professionals

If you are not really that confident with putting the play area equipment together on your own, you can order the flatpack option online and usually the supplier will come and assemble the lot for you. You can also ask them for some opinions of what items to buy according to your garden space.

Create the ultimate BBQ area in 5 steps

A well designed, aesthetically attractive barbeque area is one that can transform the garden into an extra living space that can be frequented throughout the warmer parts of the year. A get together of family or friends in such an area is always an occasion to look forward to.

So, with that in mind, here are some tips on how to make it the best possible living space it can be.

Initial Considerations

One of the most important considerations when creating the barbeque area is to ensure that it is located within close proximity of the kitchen. It’s quite simple; nobody wants to have to trek around the house or garden to get to and from the fridge. Aside from the time element, food is more likely to spill, it’s less likely to stay warm and it’s just not practical.

Flooring

Make sure to have flooring that is easy to clean after you finish your BBQ cooking.

The flooring is also very important and this is especially the case in the area you are cooking in. Barbeques may be extremely tasty, but they can also be quite messy affairs and so you may need to have a material on the ground that can be easily cleaned or will absorb the oils and greases.

The Barbeque

So, what sort of barbeque do you want – the all-important question. If you’re using a cheaper, portable barbeque, you will have a number of advantages, simply because it’s more portable, lower in cost and there is no worry about permanence. However, these smaller barbeques don’t offer the cooking options larger ones do, are not nearly as impressive and don’t create a focal point. A larger, permanent barbeque does this and can work wonderfully with the overall landscape of the area. However, take time to consider what you want as it will be permanent and will need to work well with the rest of the outdoor area and barbeque.

If you are completely revamping the area and are choosing a gas barbeque, then you may want to place in a stub gas line and have it capped. This will mean no need to lift up the area in the future. . If the barbeque is too far from the house, you may need to use cylinders. Lighting can be mains generated or from a bought generator or a generator hire option – essentially it depends on where the area is located in relation to the mains.

Design

Of course, general themes in design are extremely important and choosing the right colour, theme and views can make all the difference here. Textures are also very important with an outdoor area and can make all the difference to the look. You want the area to look attractive and also to be comfortable – you may even want to add a bar.

Extras

You should also take into account the extras you want in the area. Some people like to have a sink, roof and vents in the area, whereas others like a more simplistic approach. It comes down to you after all; however, try to make it as practical as possible – it will make for greater enjoyment and ease of use.

Low-Maintenance Yard Tricks For Busy Homeowners

Your yard is one of the first things someone notices when passing by or entering your home. Keeping your property looking beautiful may not be one of the first things on your to-do list, but doing so is going to make coming home each day a relaxing experience.

No one likes to come home to see all of the tasks that are yet to be completed, like that paint chipping on the side of your home or that hole your new puppy dug near the fence. This is why it’s important to maintain your property on a regular basis, so you don’t feel as though you’ll never catch up and get the look you’re so desperately going for.

Taking Proper Care of Your Lawn

Your neighbors may mow once a week, but every two weeks will suffice. Doing so is not only going to create less work for you during the month but this length of time will allow your grass to strengthen, as roots will have a chance to extend deeper into the soil. This way, if you aren’t exactly the best at keeping up with your watering schedule, your grass is less likely to look sickly.

Typically, watering your lawn and plants about twice a week works, but be prepared to make changes as weather differs. If it is extremely hot during the week, water more. If it is more on the rainy side, you can save on your water bill. Educate yourself on the type of grass and soil you currently have because these factors will affect how much water and overall maintenance your particular lawn requires. Over-watering is just as deadly as under-watering, so make sure you aren’t completely soaking the area. You should be able to see the soil soaking up the water. If huge puddles and mud is left behind, slow down. It’s a bit of a learn-as-you-go process, but in time, it’ll all make sense.

Creating a Safe Place for Children and Pets

Keeping a lawn looking great doesn’t have to involve harmful chemicals. Not only are there organic fertilizers that may just fit into your family’s lifestyle, but synthetic grass is also a solution many parents and pet owners turn to.

Synthetic Grass: Having a Great Yard, Without All the Work

Low-Maintenance Yard Tricks For Busy Homeowners 4 Above: Believe it – it’s artificial grass by Rollout Grass of Australia

In the past, artificial or ‘synthetic’ grass was only used for sporting events, but more and more businesses and homes are incorporating the simple solution into their exterior appeal. What’s so nice about this type of grass is that there is no need to mow, fertilize or water (unless, of course, you are cleaning the area). The only thing you’ll need to worry about is replacing your turf about every 5 years. Some brands last even longer when coupled with proper care.

Synthetic grass is great for those yards that don’t quite get enough sun or areas that just can’t seem to sustain healthy-looking grass. With demand for this product through the roof, there are more solutions than ever that work fantastic with children and pets.

Tracking Down the Right Natural Grass

Low-Maintenance Yard Tricks For Busy Homeowners 5Don’t think artificial grass is right for you? Consider locating a local grass that is extremely durable and can handle high-traffic, such as Bermuda. When compared to other types of grass, Bermuda is going to be able to withstand much more wear and tear than other types of grass. This means a more ‘alive’ look and less worry about bare patches commonly caused by excessive walking or running through the area. (Trying to keep a newborn puppy or toddlers in specific areas of the yard isn’t exactly one of the simplest tasks, although many pet owners put up fences around their favorite trees or plants to reduce damage)

Question: Why is the neighbor’s grass ALWAYS nicer?!?!

Minimizing the Areas You Need to Work On

Still not feeling as though you have the time or the energy to keep up with everything your yard requires? Another way to deal with the problem is to decrease the amount of softscape. Softscape is anything in your yard that is living, such as flowers, plants, and grass. Find ways to incorporate hardscape into your lawn’s design. Hardscape includes items you add onto your property that are not alive, such as decks or yard décor.

It may be tough work initially, but over the long-term, this is going to save you a lot of time. Whether you decide to build a new walkway or concrete sections into your property, so you have less grass to mow and weeds to worry about, the amount of maintenance you need to worry about is going to be greatly reduced.

As you can see, you don’t necessarily need to have a green thumb in order to get the job done. All it takes is a pinch of creativity, patience and the desire to make a change. Everyone deserves a yard they can enjoy and share with their guests.

How To Achieve A Killer Lawn In 6 Easy Steps

How To Achieve A Killer Lawn In 6 Easy Steps 1Ruthanne’s neat, clean and green lawn in Seattle, Washington. Photo Courtesy: Ruthanne Reid

Are you fed up of seeing that old cliché about the ‘always being greener’ applying to your neighbor’s lawn? He doesn’t seem to do anything special but the grass always looks far healthier than your sorry old patch of turf. You can take some respite in the fact that he is retired and you do not really have the time to spend in your garden, but there are a few tips that just might make your lawn stand up and be counted again.

1. Begin With The Mower!

How To Achieve A Killer Lawn In 6 Easy Steps 2

It is a fairly obvious place to start, but are you really mowing your lawn the best way possible? You need to ensure that your blades are really sharp; if they are not, you can buy a sharpening stone at your local gardening centre for a few bucks. Blunt blades will tear at the grass and leave it looking uneven and possibly open to disease. Cut your lawn frequently and this will allow it to grow back, thick and healthy.

2. Length Does Matter!

Remember not to cut the grass too short when you restart your mowing regime. It is true that short grass will grow faster, but this is not a speed competition. If the lawn is cut too short it will require far more herbicide and water. This means you will have to spend more time on ensuring your lawn does not go haywire.  The best rule of thumb is to never cut more than a third of the grass’s current height.

3. Wet Grass

You should avoid cutting the lawn if it is moist as this will cause many issues. The soil will become compacted and your roots will not be able to breathe properly. Your lawn will start to die and you will be left with some nasty bald patches.

4. Give Your Lawn a Drink!

Unless you live in an area with plentiful rainfall, you will be required to offer some water to your thirsty lawn. If you water too heavily, you will risk building up a nasty thatch condition. But you should check to see if your lawn actually needs water before turning on the taps. Here are three ways to see if it needs some liquid lunch:

  • If you cannot push a screwdriver into the ground easily – Your lawn is thirsty
  • Footprints remain indented in the grass
  • The grass retains a slightly blue tinge

Out of curiosity, I added some grass using a Photo Editor on the above lawn (shown dry in the previous picture) – what a difference!! What do you say?

5. Watering Time

However tranquil it may seem, do not water the grass in the evening. This can lead to serious grass diseases as the water will not dry out correctly. Try to get up a bit earlier and feed your grass before you head off to work in the morning.

6. Correct Type of Herbicide

It is important to select the appropriate type of herbicide for your lawn’s current condition. Here are the two varieties:

  • Pre-emergent herbicide – This will stop grass seeds from germinating and should be applied annually.
  • Post-emergent herbicide – This will kill most grass related weeds and will help your lawn to stay healthy
