Decorating Tips That Won’t Cost The Earth

With the recession tipped to go triple-dip, most home owners and tenants alike are keeping their heads down when it comes to home decor. The cheap charity-shop dining table and bargain-basement drapes will have to suffice another year as we strive to prioritize our expenses.

But just because the purse strings are kept tight, doesn’t mean you have to give up the idea of decorating your home altogether. It’s amazing what a bit of spray paint and some old jars can do to supe up your window sill. Start browsing the internet for DIY home decorating tips and you’ll find a plethora of blogs just waiting to inspire like ISpydiy.com and Designsponge.com . While there are loads of websites offering more eye candy than anything else, here are some pocket-friendly and above all practical tips, to get you started on your next interior design project.

Make a move

Here’s a tip that simply requires you to work with the materials already at your disposal and work up a bit of a sweat in the process. Merely reassessing and rearranging your existing furniture can revolutionize both how you perceive and use a space. Try ‘zoning’ a large space with strategic placement of tables or screens, or create a streamline through a smaller area by shifting sofas or shelving.

Book some DIY

Some skills are undeniably the preserve of the professional tradesperson, but there remains some handy work that is easily undertaken by anyone with patience and a bit of determination. From adding plaster cornices to distressing furniture, upholstering a set of second hand chairs or simply putting on a fresh coat of paint, doing it yourself is half the fun.

Use your local library and check out trusted guides from the likes of Reader’s Digest, which generally come good on their grand promises to make you able to tackle almost any DIY job you’d care to turn your hand to. Comprehensive rating magazines such as ‘Which?’ are also worth referring to before you make any equipment purchases.

In the frame

Beg, borrow or steal a selection of mismatched picture frames, the more ornate the better. Spray paint injects a speedy, foolproof dose of unifying colour- try glossy white or matt black finishes for effective results. Fill your frames with mirrors, inexpensive posters or prints, or the digital images that otherwise never leave your memory card. Simply hung empty, a collection of smaller frames acts like jewellery for a bare expanse of wall.

Reflected glory

Maximising light maximises your perception of space. Introducing mirrors makes a room appear larger and bounces every ounce of available light around, meaning cramped areas feel brighter and more spacious. It may be only an illusion but it’s a particularly effective one. Enhance the effect further by replacing plain light bulbs with those suited to the space – creating the effect of ‘soft candlelight’ or ‘daylight’ as appropriate, does wonders for the ambience of a room.

Light up a room

Trinket or jewel-laden chandeliers are no longer the preserve of the well-padded of pocket. The high street has hijacked the ‘statement lampshade’ market with great success, well-versed in a wide range of inexpensive, attractive options that can provide an excellent centrepiece and talking point. For a simpler statement that’s just as effective, globe-shaped paper shades and freestanding lanterns cost next to nothing and create a gorgeous glow in any room.

Colour on the cheap

Stick to a neutral colour for the bulk of a room. White and the dreaded magnolia are always the cheapest options, but are easily lifted by the purchase of a few tester pots of more interesting offerings used to pick out details and break up banality. Either mix and match contrasting colours within a room, or pick one and buy in a selection of tonal shades through your chosen hue’s spectrum.

Wallpaper – read all about it

If the wallpaper you love is pricey, don’t despair. Intricate designs look smart restricted to a single wall, or even used to highlight a smaller feature such as a recessed alcove or chimneybreast. Decide how much you can afford, and choose your placement accordingly. For completely unique wallpaper, scour charity shops for old maps, or paste up pages from a classic book or musical score. Don’t forget – all those designer papers take their inspiration from somewhere.

Celebrate your clutter

De-cluttering isn’t always a viable option and, indeed, it’s the possessions we’ve amassed that define us. By all means, pick and choose the prettiest and stash the rest, but don’t feel everything needs to be hidden away. Remember the key rule of displaying objects in odd numbers, then round up vases, boxes and crockery into mismatched groups. Hang favourite textiles on the wall or use as throws. People pay a fortune for ‘library’ wallpaper – why not just use real books?

Consider the fine details. Steal style from friends’ homes, TV shows, museums and public buildings, even the catwalk. Buy cheap, standard-issue furniture and personalize it by distressing, repainting, or customising with decoupage. Replace bland handles with odd vintage ones or coloured Perspex ‘diamonds’. Mismatching doesn’t matter – indeed, it creates a bespoke, designer feel. The same goes for replacing a set of crockery or kitchen chairs. Sometimes, ‘odds’ are even better.

The element of surprise

Just because it says ‘bathroom unit’ doesn’t mean it won’t work in the kitchen. And vice versa, fruit and vegetable trolleys make great tidies for toiletries. Never be a slave to suggestion. It’s your home, and you know what works where. March to your own (off)beat. An ornate grandfather clock in the kitchen can surprise and delight; a utilitarian filing cabinet in a bedroom is practical and quirky; an antique chair next to a freestanding bath is eccentric, yet may actually become quite essential.

It’s the selection process and an ability to put things together that really sets a home apart. Expensive designer furniture and decorating services are just lazy ways to get someone else to put the style into your home. There’s no need to raid your bank account to fund your latest home decor project – the only place to raid in most cases is simply your imagination.

How To Rid Your Home Of Roaches Once And For All

How To Rid Your Home Of Roaches Once And For All 1

What’s so scary about roaches is how great they are at hiding. If you happen to see one scurry through your kitchen while switching the light on, there are many more nearby and it’s imperative that you get rid of them as soon as possible.

Clutter Means More Places to Hide

While this is probably the last thing you want to hear, you know all of those boxes in the garage? The accumulated paperwork and clothing in the attic that you never quite made the time to sort through? Well, all of these areas are perfect hiding places for roaches. Not able to find any roaches? You’ll generally find droppings in your cupboards and throughout your kitchen, as those are the areas they will find most food during the evening when they come out to scavenge.

Roaches Enter Through Surprising Areas

Roaches can enter your home through drains, so it’s important that you block off your tub when not in use, close the toilet lid and block any other areas that offer them easy access to your home when you have a roach problem. It’s impossible to seal everything, and this is why getting rid of them is so important. In time, they will take over your home.

Beginning the Cleanup Process

Roaches hate bleach. Begin cleaning your property, your clothing and linens from top to bottom with the stuff. You may want to also opt for the roach trap method so you won’t have to see the little guys. These traps are generally closed containers with openings that lure roaches inside. The base contains adhesive, which causes them to become stuck upon entry. There are also many bug sprays and pesticides that are similar to those that a professional would use that can be used throughout your property.

The only problem here is you want to make sure you are selecting a solution that will not harm your family or your pets. Read each product carefully and if there ever comes a time where you are unsure whether the products are working, it may be time to call in a professional. They are going to have the most up-to-date solutions and can work with you so your family doesn’t become affected.

Keeping Those Pesky Critters Away

Now that you have kicked your unwanted guests to the curb, it’s important that you maintain a clean home where new roaches won’t want to come in and wreak havoc yet again. Make sure your trash is emptied regularly, your floors are swept and vacuumed and that any opened food containers are put away immediately.

Seal any cracks that may be easy access entries for the little buggers and take away water sources, such as leaky pipes, as roaches are attracted to water. If you have wood piles in your yard, keep them as far away from your home as possible, because the pests love to hide within them and as the weather cools down, will move into your home to stay warm. Many exterminators offer bi-monthly or other regular treatments where they will check in and make sure your roaches are truly gone for good, while looking for signs of new intruders.

Do It Yourself Home Improvement Tips and Tricks: Dos and Don’ts

Do It Yourself Home Improvement Tips and Tricks - Dos and Don'ts 1A beautiful homemade chandelier by John Mills for his living room. Photo Courtesy: John Mills

Home improvements can seem very intimidating when looking at the whole picture but they definitely don’t have to be. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your home is looking the way you want it to. Don’t think you are required to spend all of your savings or make complete renovations to create a new vibe or feeling in your home. Sometimes there are little things you can do that are going to be just as beneficial, if not more so (due to cost and time saved), for not only the look of your home but also for your family’s enjoyment.

Avoid Becoming Overwhelmed: Start Simple

Do: Focus on the small things. How can you make your living room better? Trying to make it pop? Why not add a few photos of your family, your pets and personal items such as those beautiful creations your children have brought home from school. Take your personality and your character, whatever it is that makes you unique and shows off what makes your family fun and unique.

Don’t: Look too far ahead. Looking into the future is an important step to any part of life but the last thing you want to do is stress yourself out. Taking things one step at a time, one day at a time, is what is going to get you the best results.

For example, if you are trying to add an outdoor room, break the project up into easy-to-handle sections. Start by focusing on just the planning of the space itself. What are your dimensions? How many people do you think you want to be able to hold? What types of things do you plan to store there? These are all questions to get you started. Then, you can start working out the exact details such as which type of material you’d like to use and getting everything inside.

Change is Everything and Means Everything

Do It Yourself Home Improvement Tips and Tricks - Dos and Don'ts 3

Do: Take time to think of ways that you can mix up the setup of your home, because let’s face it; looking at the same four walls day in and day out can get really old, really fast. If you notice yourself just not wanting to get up in the morning or losing your motivation to clean up or exercise, it may be time to change your scenery.

Don’t: Stress over the changes you plan on making. Maybe all you really need to do is rotate items that are in your home currently with things that have been packed away for a while; like that family heirloom your mother was always worried about you breaking as a child.

A Low Budget Makes Only a Slight Difference in the Long Run

Do: Take the time to budget yourself even if you have the money to spare because over the long term, the money you saved can be used for other household necessities. Saving a mere 5 dollars a month turns into $60 in a year’s time.

Don’t: Worry about how much money you make or how much you have to spare. Even if you have nothing extra, you can still add something new to your home. Start by checking out garage sales and thrift stores. Sometimes you can get items nearly (or completely) free.

Home Insulation And Energy Saving Tricks

Tilt and Turn UPVC WindowsTilt and turn UPVC windows offer superior functionality with a convenient adjustment system, allowing the natural ventilation in your home, without sacrificing your security. Image Courtesy: Windows for Life of Australia

If you’re looking for a more comfortable home 365 days a year, then it may be time to verify that your home is properly insulated. Today we are going to talk about a few of the most common reasons for air leaks and an increase in your monthly bills. Whether you’re trying to keep cool in the summertime or warm in the winter, a well insulated home means a much happier family (and wallet, of course).

Tracking Down Potential Leaks

It never hurts to walk the interior and exterior of your home, looking for areas where air may be escaping or creeping inside your home. Windows and doors are common culprits. While upgrading your windows to double pane may not exactly be a task you want to take on today, even something as simple as improving the seals around your windows can be extremely beneficial. Check any doors that lead to the outside of your property, or are connected to cooler areas, such as your garage. If there is space underneath them, consider adding sweeps (If the door isn’t often used, placing a towel in front of the door will suffice). Doing so will also keep bugs and other pests out of your living quarters.

Other locations to keep a close eye on are lighting fixtures and electrical outlets. The best way to locate drafts is to do a thorough walkthrough of your property with a candle on a windy day. Caulk is your friend for both interior and exterior leaks; both extremely easy to use and affordable.

Keeping Those Utility Bills from Shooting Sky-High

Insulated Attic windows

Make sure that your attic is properly insulated.

An attic is one of the most common areas of a home where energy is lost. Because of this, it is important that you check at least once a year that there is a minimum of 12 inches of insulation. Instead of measuring, simply make sure you cannot see your floor joists, because they are typically about 10 to 11 inches. Properly insulated walls and basements also prove to help save money on monthly bills.

Working Heating and Cooling Systems

If all of the above isn’t quite doing the trick and you find yourself needing to crank up the heat or air conditioning, ask yourself a question: when was the last time you cleaned out those vents or had a service professional come out to the house?

Cleaning out your filter system and motor regularly is imperative to the health of your system. Especially if you have pets in the home, this maintenance should be done more than just a few times a year – possibly even on a monthly basis. Having something as seemingly ‘minor’ as dirty filters can quickly destroy a nice unit. Refer to your user manual. Some units can go longer without filter changes than others, and the time of the year as well as how often they are used, makes a big difference. A general rule of thumb for a healthy and long-lived system is to have a professional come out at least once a year to make sure everything is in tip-top shape, on top of your everyday maintenance.

Home Improvement Ways Of Making Your Property Attractive

Having a home you love to come home to isn’t just about fancy decorations, expensive flooring and over the top electronics to entertain your guests. A great home can be created from the simplest of upgrades and changes. When your home looks and feels the way you’d like it to, there is something so powerful in that. Today we are going to discuss with you a few things that will help to keep your residence a place you can go to get lost in your thoughts and forget about stress.

Tidy Up: Outside

Your front yard is one of the first things you see when driving up to your home, and if it’s messy or unkept, this can instantly shoot your stress level through the roof. Instead of putting off mowing your lawn or taking care of those weeds that have grown through your walkway, take a moment to get started on the project now. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to walk through the entire space, but accomplishing something, no matter how small, is going to feel much better than accomplishing nothing at all.

Tidy Up: Inside

Home Improvement Ways Of Making Your Property Attractive 4

The busiest areas of your home should be the places you put most of your energy into. For instance, do you have a lot of counter space but are barely able to see most of it? This can be a problem. Not only does this make cooking meals a much more difficult experience but this also takes away from the beauty of the room.

When you arrive home from the grocery store, instead of placing food on the counter and leaving it there, do your best to place things where you want them to go. If you aren’t sure where certain items will work best, have an area of the counter that you can come back to, just don’t get into the habit of leaving them there for extended periods of time. Habits are tough to break, but with determination, these kinds of things will become second nature to you.

Create a System and Stick to It

Just like it’s important to keep up with the exterior appearance of your home, it’s equally as important that you keep a close eye on the inside of your home. It can become extremely easy to get caught up in how tired, overworked or completely overwhelmed you are, but discipline can help alleviate all those feelings. Walking into a room that is organized, easy on the eyes and clean can make you feel surprisingly more at ease, no matter what may be going on in your life.

Instead of letting the trash pile up and waiting until the last day to take it out, make it a point to carry it outside. This way, it’s out of sight and can become ‘out of mind’. Have dishes that need to be cleaned? Instead of tossing them in the sink to be dealt with later, wash them right away and let them dry. Or, place them directly in the dishwasher. Having less clutter and items on your daily to-do list is going to make you feel much better.

Presentation Means Everything

Home Improvement Ways Of Making Your Property Attractive 7

Get ready and open them curtains in the morning. Photo Courtesy: Dave & Margie Hill

Many people get caught up in the trap of not changing out of their night clothes or doing their hair if they aren’t leaving the house. While this may not seem like a very big deal, there’s something so empowering about getting up, having a daily routine and taking the time to give yourself a little TLC. Allow yourself the luxury of selecting an outfit you like, even if you aren’t going to be leaving the house all day. Take that quick shower instead of waiting until you’re exhausted later in the evening. Make your bed. Open up those curtains to let the sunshine in and do anything else that makes you feel motivated. Maybe this means drinking that daily cup of coffee and giving yourself 10 minutes to veg in front of the television.

What does this have to do with your home being attractive? Well, when you feel and look good, you instinctively take care of your home and your home looks nice. It’s also much easier to take on any stress that may come your way during the upkeep of your home when you are feeling fresh and confident. A nice presentation of your personality and home go hand in hand.

Have Some Fun

While it’s important to keep up on your household chores and daily tasks, it’s equally important to give yourself some time to relax. Reward yourself by watching a movie or taking a warm bath (without looking at the clock, for once).

Trying to cram too much into every single day of your life can make everything more complicated, reducing your quality of life. It’s amazing what a few minutes of relaxation can do. Don’t feel you have enough time for fun? Schedule the little things, such as walks, into your to-do list. May not seem like a big deal now, but you’ll thank yourself later. All work and no play definitely isn’t a good way to stay energized and motivated and those are the keys to make you keep improving your living space – your lovely home.
