When you think about luxury homes and their expensive furnishings, marble comes to your mind instantly. It is such an elegant and beautiful substance that it is hard to believe that it comes from the ground beneath our feet. Marble has been used for palaces and buildings of great importance for many centuries.

In recent years it has become more accessible for us mere mortals, and now you are able to buy the marble in slabs, and shape it for your own use. It is not an easy material to work with and here we look at the various uses and applications you may wish to use it for.

Greeks And Romans, and You?

The period dramas on television always use a marble floor when they revisit Ancient Greece and Rome; it lends an image of luxury and classic style to any scene. In this day and age of fake wooden floors and plastic worktops, it is nice to see something a bit more permanent. But can you really work with such a material without the proper tools and a lot of expertise?

Marble – The Facts

Marble belongs to the family of stones known as metamorphic rock and it is made up from recrystallized carbonate minerals, usually dolomite or calcite. It is usually used for sculpting statues and in the building trade. White marble is generally used for sculptures and tends to give off a waxy look which lends ‘life’ to the finished article.

The construction trade uses a mixture of calcite, dolomite or serpentine. This type of marble is much easier to polish. Pakistan is the chief exporter of marble, at over 100,000 tonnes per year. China is the largest importer worldwide and imports nearly 70,000 tonnes per year.

In Your Home

Whilst marble is undoubtedly a beautiful material to look at, it is far from perfect as a building medium. Although extremely hard and vitreous, it can also suffer from scratches quite easily. Unlike its bedfellow, granite, marble is quite delicate in terms of resistance. However, it can be used as a countertop if it is treated and sealed correctly.  Usually a homeowner will consider the practical issues of marble and compare these with the class and beauty on offer. As you can imagine, the form beats function most of the time in this equation!

Marble Walls

A marble wall is something to behold; they really add so much to the overall ambience of whatever room they adorn. The scratch issue is not pertinent in this case, and the stunning colors and shades are unmatchable as a wall medium. I’m sure there will be a plastic facsimile of marble walling one day, but that is all it ever will be.

Marble Floors

If you are thinking about a marble floor, it is really best to use the professionals to fit these. But you should think hard about the particular design you want. A lighter floor may seem very pretty, but a darker one will add warmth to the visual aspect. As marble is so expensive, it is a good idea to think about marble tiles for your floor. If they become damaged, you will only have a small piece to replace instead of the whole floor!

Two Sets of Eco-friendly Polywood Outdoor ChairsLong lasting, Eco-friendly Polywood Chairs by Adirondack Authority of Colorado Springs, Colorado

Home is one place that everyone can come back to. We all look forward to coming home from work or school and hitting our favorite chair. Relaxation and comfort can only be found in the surroundings of home. When furnishing your home, it is important to choose seating options and arrangements that will be ideal for your home. Think about the purpose of the seating in your space to give your home function as well as comfort.

Relaxation

A home without a relaxing area is just not a home. Most homeowners have that one chair that is oh so comfortable! The piece may be a shabby, old recliner or a new leather oversized chair. Styles can vary, but we all have that special place we like to relax in. Make sure you have this area in your home. choose comfortable pieces and arrange them in an area that gives a vibe of comfort.

Closeness

Two Closely Placed Relaxing Chairs on a Home Deck

It is important to view the closeness of your chair seating. Chairs should have no more than six feet of space between them. This space between the seating will encourage conversation between guests but will still leave the right amount of space to allow traffic flow. Be sure that your seating arrangement allows for the amount of space needed for walking through the room as well as closeness for speaking with others in the area.

Group Around Focal Point

Seating areas should also be based on a focal point. If you have a fireplace, this can be your focal point. Televisions, Large art and pretty much anything that you enjoy can be a focal point in the room. Simply, choose something that you enjoy and then place your seating options around this area to supply a conversation piece or area for lounging.

Type of Furniture

It is also important to consider the type of seating for your space. For a seating arrangement, the type of furniture is important for the type of room. Take a family room for example. In a family room, you will have a television, which will be the main focal point. This focal point will need to be surrounded by seating options. You may choose to place your seating in a box shape or L shape. This will depend on the layout of the room with doorways as well as how large the space is. Take a good look at your room and determine which option will work best for your seating needs. In larger rooms, more than one seating arrangement can exist to create several seating areas.

Be aware that it may take some time to find the best seating arrangement for your home. Consider your space carefully and have plenty of hands, on hand, to help you move your chairs around to find the right setup for your space. Do not be afraid to try different options that may seem out of the box. You may find that a setup you would never dream of, actually works!

Planning the Perfect Living Space

Your home is where you’ll spend a lot of your time, but you need to have a house that you can comfortably live in. Planning the perfect living space can take some effort, but the rewards more than justify it.

Using the most of your living space and creating an atmosphere within it can brighten up your home, making it a much more comfortable place for you to live in and for guests to visit.

But to achieve that, you first need to plan.

Look at your current area

To start planning your perfect living space, you first need to look at what space you have available. Look at how your furniture is placed and if it could be better arranged. It might be hard to look at your house in any other way from what you’re used to at first, but once you’re able to see your settees and sofas in a different position you might find a way to save a lot of space.

Deciding if you have enough space available in your room for the design idea you want to implement is also important at the start before money starts being spent.

Draw your idea first

Getting a plan drawn up of the way you’d like your furniture before you start can help you show others what it is you’re hoping to achieve. Other people can offer insight and advice, as well as help point things out you otherwise would have missed.

Drawing your perfect living space will help you stay focused and to the point when putting the plan into action. It’ll also help you decide if there is enough space between your settees and sofas before you start moving them around.

Colours

Colours can change the entire feel of a room. You might have decided on a design for your room already, but if you haven’t then it’s important you get the colours right.

Making sure the colours match each other in the planning stage can save you time later. Waiting until you’ve already started painting is a bad choice. Contrasting colours can sometimes work well together, so testing out different colours is a good idea.

If you’re planning on keeping your existing furniture, you should make sure that the potential new colour of your room works well with it. If you’re buying new furniture, making sure that it matches the colour is just as important.

Lighting

Lighting should be considered the entire way through planning. Working out the location of light sources in day time and night is necessary.

Lighting can completely control the mood and setting in a room. It can be used in many different ways to change the atmosphere.

Deciding which type of lighting will be the most suitable should be part of your plan. Lights from the ceiling are important in tall rooms. Making sure there are no dark corners by using a lamp to light it up can help add to the more inviting feeling of the room.

How To Make Small Space Interior Designing Work

Only a lucky handful can say “It’s sprawling!” when asked how big their house is. A lot more folks have to make the most out of small apartment spaces.

And mind you, it isn’t exactly an easy task, especially if you’d have to make it work for a family. How do you fit three kids in one bedroom, along with their closets, toys, and whatnots? How do you make your living space look ‘elegantly cozy’? How exactly do you fit a small home office in your already small two-bedroom apartment?

Don’t start panicking though, any designing challenge can be conquered with a bit of creativity, and a dash of innovation!

To get you off to a good start, here are a few tips on how you can maximize the small home you’ve been blessed with, and make it all come together in designing bliss:

How To Make Small Space Interior Designing Work 2 - Floor Plan

Floor Plan – Photo Courtesy: Oyvind Solstad

1. Make a floor plan.

Yes, even if you’re just working on a few square meters of space, careful planning will be necessary. In fact, your floor plan may be the key to achieving the most use out of your home. Don’t be intimidated by the words ‘floor plan’ – it’s just a matter of lines and squares.

When chalking up your home’s design, make sure to indicate the space designations for each area. Where does the sofa go? How do you want the beds arranged in your kids’ room? Take careful note of details you want to go into each and every room. This will also help you determine any additional expenses you may need to allot money for.

2. Go for pale or light-colored paint.

If you want to visually ‘enlarge’ a room, paint the walls and ceilings in pale or light-colored hue. It doesn’t have to be white; you can go for cream or a light butter-like color too! Not a fan of ‘washed-out’ colors? Light blues and light mint greens would also work! Pastels would also make a good choice, especially for kids’ rooms.

3. If possible, take down walls or even tall dividers.

Remember the song lyric ‘too many walls have been built in between us’? Well, you should start singing that as you remove tall dividers and perhaps a couple of interior walls to make your home look roomier. Doing this would work well with living areas, kitchens, and dining spaces. Giving these rooms in your house an open floor plan will give your home a more ‘easy-flowing’ and continuous look.

4. Always think multi-purpose.

Buying and stocking too many things into a small space will definitely make it look even tinier. But if you really can’t help yourself, purchase home stuff or furniture that can serve multiple purposes. For example, sofas or beds with built-in drawers will definitely give you more space to store what would otherwise clutter your rooms. Even decorative materials (think boxes) doubling as storage space would help give you more ‘floor area’ to work with!

5. Avoid ‘hulking’ furniture.

Expansive furniture really look attractive, but, they won’t seem as grand when placed inside a small room. It would just look out of place, and tends to take a considerable amount of precious space in your home. Favor streamlined designs, minimalist even. Think size will take away from your furniture’s ‘character’? Go for textured surfaces or accent the room with interesting décor.

6. Install mirrors.

Ever wondered why most elevators are surrounded by mirrors? Well, mirrors give the illusion of bigger space, and makes for a great anti-claustrophobia feature for really cramped areas, like elevators. It can work the same magic in your little home too! Invest in a big mirror for the living room and the dining area, to give them some ‘breathing space’.
