Simple Household Changes To Combat Unnecessary Trash

In today’s day and age, there are a lot of products that we purchase or use that may, at first glance, seem to make our lives easier or more convenient but cause far more damage than good. With the quality and health of our environment being an important factor in the future of the planet, now has never been a better time to take a good look at how much waste your family is creating and how you can take steps towards making better choices.

Opt for reusable solutions

Before you can make positive changes, you must first take a good look at what your family uses on a regular basis. Things such as paper towels can add up very quickly when cleaning up around the home. Opt for reusable solutions whenever possible. For example, leave paper towels to hygiene during meals and reach for wash cloths instead when cleaning off counters and tables. They are small enough that you’ll barely notice them in the washer with your weekly load and you’ll be limiting your impact on local landfills.

Taking an In-Depth Look at Weekly Usage

Many homeowners are beginning to take part in home waste audits. This is one of the best ways to track where you are creating the most waste so you can work towards more effective solutions. Simply weigh the amount of recyclables, compost and trash that has accumulated as you bring out your bins on garbage day. This allows for easy comparison from one week to the next. Doing so may help your family realize just how much they are throwing away instead of recycling or other means in which reducing trash may be possible.

Simple Household Changes To Combat Unnecessary Trash 3Among the first things to reduce waste, while helping the environment, is to cut down on the number of bottles you use for water or soda.

For example, you may notice that a large percentage of your recycle bin is filled with pop cans and bottles week after week. Making your own soda with products such as the SodaStream may be something to consider, as this can reduce the number of bottles in your recycle bin by the thousands each and every year.

Select Environmentally Friendly Options from the Get-Go

A tip for those who find a surprisingly large amount of trash? When you are purchasing new items, see if there are solutions that have been recycled previously. Establishments such as Starbucks only use cups and napkins that are made up of recycled materials and you can do the same at home. There may not always be a 100% recycled solution, but reusing versus cutting down more trees is always the better decision.

Any time you purchase a new appliance for your home, make sure it is backed by ENERGY STAR. These products are much gentler on the environment and they save you quite a bit of cash on your monthly bills.

‘Precycling’: Limiting What Enters Your Home

Many consumers are familiar with recycling, but what many fail to realize is that recycling can begin outside of your residence. Just because you can purchase something in bulk doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great deal if you are likely to toss out much of what you have bought, although doing so can mean less package waste if you know the products are something your household desperately needs.

  • Stopping waste before it starts sounds too good to be true, but there are many simple ways to get the job done.
  • When shopping, instead of using the paper or plastic bags provided by local stores, bring your own reusable bags.
  • Many businesses will ask if you need a receipt and if you plan on tossing it in the trash the moment you arrive home anyway, say ‘no’.
  • Running errands? Bring your own drink container instead of being tempted to purchase beverages while on the go.
  • For daily lunches, invest in a lunch box with a plastic sandwich container. This will save you at least five plastic bags and sandwich bags every single week. That’s 240 of each, every single year, just for one member of the household!
  • To get rid of excess paper waste, opt for paperless billing and keep all records of your payments and bills online. Most companies will even send you an email when a bill is coming up so you don’t have to worry about late fees.
  • Paying via credit or debit card also means no more need to pull out those checks.

Tips From Professionals To Help You Buy Furniture Online

Tips From Professionals To Help You Buy Furniture Online 1

Furnishing your home can be fun, but for many people, the prospect of wandering around a furniture showroom and then still having to wait for delivery of their furniture (because so many things won’t fit in a car or aren’t held in stock) seems a bit pointless when it is so easy to order things online. Of course, when you order online, there are loads of choices and you can get great deals, but you are basing your buying decisions on photographs rather than being able to see and feel the product, which can lead to some disappointment.

Here are some tips for getting the most rewarding results when you buy furniture new or second hand on the internet:

Choose Who You Buy From Carefully

Online Fraud – Photo Courtesy: Don Hankins

The first tip any professional will give you when it comes to buying your furniture on the web is to buy only from trusted retailers. What this means depends on what you are buying – obviously a trusted retailer for brand new pieces or flat pack furniture might be a big name brand, whereas for second hand or unusual furniture, you may simply be looking for an eBay store with a good reputation or a local business with great reviews.

Safe Transactions

As well as making sure the company can be trusted, you also want to make sure the transactions are safe. Major department stores are safe in this respect, as are large websites like eBay and Amazon. However, if you are buying from a small company using their e-commerce solutions, you may want to check their security credentials.

Terms of Sale

Tips From Professionals To Help You Buy Furniture Online 4You should also look carefully at terms relating to the sale; for example, the returns policy and how much is charged for shipping. Be aware that ‘free shipping’ isn’t always what it seems – some sites with free shipping up the price of the product, so it may still cost more than buying the same thing with paid shipping somewhere else.

Choose What You Buy Carefully

There are two things that can vary from how the typical item looks in pictures to how it will look in real life – size and colour. Make sure you check the measurements of items you want to buy to check you haven’t derived a misguided idea of how big something is from its picture, and be aware that colours can look different in images. While this isn’t usually too significant, and it may just look a little lighter in the shot than it does when you get it, consider this when you are trying to match things. If you want matching furniture, buy from the same store and range.

Read Descriptions Thoroughly

You should also read descriptions very carefully. In many cases, furniture is shipped flat packed or in components, and you’ll need to do at least some of the putting together yourself. While for something like a bed this may be very easy, something like an entertainment centre might be vastly more complex than it looks, so also look at customer reviews to see if other people have struggled. If you are buying second hand, you may find the furniture is shipped as is, so you’ll want to check you can actually fit it through doors and any passageways in your house you’ll need to get it through.

Versatile Shades and Blinds With or Without Drapes? Some Styling Tips

Versatile Shades and Blinds With or Without Drapes - Some Styling Tips 150s Fabric Valance – Jo Ann of Edgefield, South Carolina, USA still makes them available at her store Betty and Babs

During the 1950′s, draperies were one of the most common embellishments which were put up in almost every room in the house like it was a norm. But the question is, “Are drapes still in?”. Well yes, but just like everything has changed a great deal since 1950s, even drapes have evolved. In addition to stylish drapes, the modern house decor includes installation of blinds and modern window coverings. These are now available in versatile designs and at affordable range; they have almost become the core fashion of each home décor and have replaced draperies to a great extent.

Draperies now are mostly used as a decorative piece as they help infuse warmth in the room and soften the atmosphere and yes add some splash of colors to the surrounding. But the question is what would be the best idea, choosing to install blinds alone or accompany blinds with drapes?

Enhance the beauty with drapes and blinds together

The exclusive fabric, with which the decorative side drapes are made, sets a level of cosiness and includes warmth to bedrooms, family rooms, living rooms, libraries, etc. Also, if you have high ceilings then the presence of draperies climbing up covers the empty wall space and gives the rooms a perfect finishing touch. Or if you want your room to look taller, you can use full length curtains over a blind or a shade.

Home Decor is all about beauty!

In recent years, many new assortments of blinds have been rolled out. ‘Sheer blinds’ are a part of these new lineups and is one of the great additions to the blinds. For rooms which you cannot open and close the shades every day, you can consider selecting fabrics like roller shades, Carolina shadings and pleated shades. These are ‘see through’ fabrics which are intricately made and a perfect choice for a formal dining room or living rooms.

One other benefit associated with blinds is that you do not need to pull them up each time you want the sun rays to seek through your windows. You can leave it down all the time and still the light will stream into those rooms. But as I mentioned earlier, these are a perfect choice for formal rooms. The perfect way to dress up the windows there in these rooms is choosing decorative side drapes. Either of it you can choose, just blinds, or blinds with drapes. The beauty of the area will multiply manifold.

Redefine your home interiors

Insulated curtains accompanied with shades are a perfect solution to the heat problem in summers and cold climate in winters. Keep the heat out in summers and let it not leave your space in winters. Some of the other options that you can think of for blocking the heat include window treatment. This includes a blackout shade, and a single or double cell honeycomb shade. If you are seeking privacy then you can consider choosing a solid treatment like an aluminium mini blind or a wood blind.

Leather or Fabric – Which One is a Better Choice for a Sofa for Your Living Room?

Leather or Fabric - Which One is a Better Choice for a Sofa for Your Living Room 1

It’s not difficult to decide that you want to purchase another couch. Then again, it is not simple to choose what sort of a couch you need. If this is simple to you, then discovering the sort of couch fabric you need is troublesome.

Do you need just a couch or would you like the best sofa available?

Do you need leather upholstery or would you prefer woven fabrics?

Do you need a couch for your lounge or your room?

There are such a large number of contemplations that need to be taken when getting a couch.

Choosing Sofa Fabrics

There are various fabrics that are accessible out there that really make the whole methodology of picking one that is suited for your requirements fairly testing. There are various points to remember when picking a couch fabric, the most important one being, do you own a pet? Felines and mutts can simply paw into light fabrics within just hours of purchasing your new sofa. So you need to pick a fabric that is impervious to all their torture.

Leather or Fabric - Which One is a Better Choice for a Sofa for Your Living Room 2A Leather Sofa

What is the motivation behind the couch (decorative/utilitarian)? Case in point, provided that you’re buying a couch where you anticipate that there will be dozing from time to time, then leather won’t be an extraordinary decision. You might rather choose a softer fabric. How frequently will the couch be utilized? Is it going to be in a room that you will only use from time to time, or the lounge that you use throughout the day?

Leather or Fabric - Which One is a Better Choice for a Sofa for Your Living Room 3A Fabric Sofa

Irrevocably, a fabric for the couch must be picked remembering the general topic and the example of your interior design in the room you are setting it in. Here is a list of some choices to help you make a decision:

Microfiber:

This is the best decision for a home that has pets. Just like the name, this kind of fabric has very small woven fibers that won’t allow the pet hair to stick on it. It may also be cleaned very easily if it gets dirty. It is the perfect material for lounging around on and spending all day with.

Leather:

This is a softer type of fabric that holds its very own class. Leather furniture will look rich, stylish and very modern in the traditional as well as contemporary setting. Although it is the perfect pet for a home with pets that shed a lot of fur, it’s not the best for those pets that like to scratch on the furniture. Leather is also good for homes that have children, since it can be easily maintained and cleaned.

Faux Leather:

People who are worried about placing a leather sofa in their home can also choose among faux leather. It is just as durable, and more damage proof with pets. A faux leather sofa is very inexpensive and it looks just as rich as a real leather sofa. This is a great consideration when looking into buying sofas.

Chenille:

This fabric is one of the best choices, as it is not only elegant and rich looking, but it is also a lot more durable when you compare it with the other fabrics. It is most ideal for a setting in the living room as it is soft and comfortable. Great for visitors and family time.

Rayon Blends:

Rayon is durable, comfortable and soft when it is blended together with other fabrics like wool, silk or cotton. It is also very fade and mildew resistant. However, it isn’t the best choice for a sofa that is going to be exposed to a lot of potential damage, as it can began to look worn out a lot quicker.

Acrylic:

These kinds of fibers are similar to those of wool, therefore providing your sofa with a soft touch. It is wrinkle, fade, stain free and durable, but it is also a lot cheaper than some of the other sofas.

Silk:

Silk is the most chosen type of sofa. Even though it is challenging to maintain, a lot of older folks keep them around for design and style. It is perfect for a room that is not used much, and will add a sense of fashion and expense to your home.

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 1Photo Courtesy: Kooni Sutra

So, you have finally decided to replace your age-old rug with a new one. However, you can’t just barge into a carpet shop and pick the softest and the most appealing one. There are many more aspects to a carpet you simply cannot afford to ignore, especially if it is for home use.

Let us take a look at five of the crucial ones.

1. Awareness about the different types of carpet:

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 2

Knowledge is power and in this case, it is essential too. You don’t want to pick a crude rug for your home, since you will even lie down on it. Home carpets come in various types with varied degrees of softness and durability. There’s the textured carpet, the Saxony carpet, the Berber rug, the California shag carpet, a print carpet, and patterned rugs. The common kinds of carpet include those woven, needlefelt, tufted, and knotted.

2. The durability and softness:

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 3

You might think that durability depends heavily upon the softness of the product, given that carpets are made for comfort. However, there is no solid connection between these two. Durability of the carpet essentially depends upon its density, its preparation technique, and the type of fiber used. The fiber types may be any kind, ranging from the woolen to the polyester. And the density of the carpet is ideally inversely proportional to its softness.

3. The most apparent aspect – the look of the carpet:

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 4

The color should obviously be in contrast with the wallpaper and the floor. Usually, most blokes opt for carpets splashed with numerous colors. Such bright colors light up the entire house in even the gloomiest of seasons. Neutral hues go well with a smaller room, since they make it appear larger; and the darker, more vivid ones provide a closed effect. In this department though, a major part of the choice rests with you.

4. The cleaning woes:

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 5

How do you feel when a glass of cola spills on your favorite rug? The stain, the eventual smell, and the rough patch are irritating to say the least; and the cleaning process, frustrating. It is thus crucial that your rug doesn’t spoil when something spills on it. It is better to pick one with a high stain resistance than stain treatment. Prevention is better than cure after all. A moderate bit of both is preferred by most folks though; but these might cost a fortune, which brings us to your budget.

5. Prices are skyrocketing:

Five Crucial Tips That Will Aid You To Choose A Carpet 6Above: Nadia, from Sydney, Australia, while deciding to buy this ‘veg dye rug with goofy animals in situ’ says “We aren’t going to buy it becuase it’s rather expensive but it was good to see it in context to better appreciate size and colour scheme”. Photo Courtesy: Nadia Priestley

Believe it or not, carpets are more in demand today than they were in the ancient Arabic era. There is nothing like an affordable rug these days that comes with comfort. Indulge is the term when you have to spend on carpets. Now you might think that more the price, better will the quality of the rug be. But that is not always the case.

Sometimes, a carpet may be tagged with an exorbitant price, but the quality may be poor. It may be essentially compromised for style. So check with the dealer, scan the online world and heed the recommendations before jumping the gun. Don’t just go by the price offered.
