When the time arrives for you to think about doing some posh home improvements, you can often get carried away with the choice. There are a myriad of excellent upgrade ideas to consider, but the internet sometimes makes these choices even harder to make.

There are so many home improvement websites that offer excellent advice, so that you sometimes wish you had an extra home just to compare the differences.

This article takes a look at using liquid limestone to beautify your external living areas.

Why The Exterior Matters

Many homeowners spend a fortune on the interior of their home and tend to neglect how important the exteriors are. When people look at your home, they rarely even get a chance to view the interior, and the way your house is presented externally is what they take away with them. If your home looks a bit tatty and needs some love, why not make this your priority the next time that you have some time and cash available?

Outdoor Features

As well as your garden, the main external features to an average home are as follows:

  • Your driveway
  • Any patio areas
  • Your garage
  • External windows and doors

The materials that are used for your driveway can often start to deteriorate and soon become an embarrassment. There can be nothing worse than pulling up to your house and trying to distract yourself from this unsightly mess. We will also address the patio situation in this article and explore an exciting new option for you to consider.

Liquid Limestone – The Facts

Is It Time To Consider Your Home's Exterior For Once 4Liquid limestone is a beautiful substance that offers a stunningly smooth surface and is very durable. It is poured, like concrete, onto your structures and can be formed into many shapes and designs. Unlike paving, there is no possibility of weeds ever popping up and it has incredibly high thermal resistance.

Once your liquid limestone has set correctly, you will have virtually zero maintenance to worry about. A typical liquid limestone driveway should remain undamaged for about 5 years. If you apply a decent water based sealer, you should not have any issues with leaking. This will also offer immediate protection to the surface from scratches and marking.

On Your Driveway

You will first need to remove the old structure and this may take some considerable effort; why not ask a local builder to do this for you? You can keep the old design for your new liquid limestone driveway or fill in the old foundations and think of something new instead.

Choosing liquid limestone is another aspect you need to consider as it comes in a variety of finishes and designs. Think about your own design and try to pick a colour and shade that compliments this nicely. This improvement can be done by a dedicated home owner with a few pals to help, or you can shop around for a professional team to do this for you.

Perfect Patio

When applying this material to your patio, you should treat it in a similar fashion to concrete and choose the colour and shade according to the nearest external wall. Otherwise you may risk a nasty clash of themes, if you are in any doubt, just ask for the building team to give you their considered opinion. Also bear in mind that you may need to have some control lines cut into the patio to avoid cracking at a later date.

What Are You Waiting For?

Have a look on the web for the massive variety of liquid limestone colours and shades available, you will soon be tearing up that grotty driveway for something far easier on the eye!

Top 4 Areas Of Concern To Consider Before Making The Choice On Your Office Flooring

Choosing the flooring for your office is an important decision that will affect both the aesthetics and the functionality of your office. While it is important to consider your personal taste, you also have to remember that there are others present in the office.

Think about your employees, clients and visitors when making the final decision. It is a good idea to listen to professional opinions in order to get the floor that will enhance the overall décor. Following are four helpful tips when choosing office flooring that you can consider:

Traffic in the Area

It is important to think about the traffic in the area when choosing flooring material. A busy or high traffic area like the lobby or reception will require flooring that is strong and durable. You should remember that darker colors are more likely to show signs of the high traffic. If you install hardwood floors, regular maintenance through recoating will help to protect the floor finish. The type of wood and the finish, will determine how the floor fairs. Using floor mats in the high traffic areas can also help to protect the floor.

Overall Décor

The office design and décor will determine the floor that will work best. It is important to look for the material and color that will complement the overall look, from the furnishings to the accessories. Dark colors make the space look smaller, while giving the room a more traditional or formal feel.

Light colors make the space look more open and airy, and they are more suitable for a more casual or contemporary office. There are many colors to choose from but it is important to look for those that are suitable for the office. Look for flooring that will enhance each room and bring out its unique personality.

Room Function

A floor that is suitable for a doctor’s office will be different from that of a lawyer or marketer’s office. You need to consider the function for the office when choosing the floor. You can choose different materials for the kitchen or lunch areas. You also need to think about the work going on in the office, as this will help you to think about issues like muffled flooring, flooring suitable for swivel chairs and other factors. Make sure that you consider the comfort of all the users.

Floor Maintenance

You need to think about the maintenance requirements when choosing flooring. Some types of floors will require more maintenance than others will. It is important to get reputable professional services to clean the office floor in order to ensure that your floor is properly maintained. Make sure that those responsible for cleaning and maintenance have experience dealing with your floor type. It is important to find out the best cleaning process and products during the floor installation.

You need to ask questions before choosing office flooring so that you can avoid problems down the road. Buying flooring from a reputable manufacturer will help to ensure that you get the best quality materials. Think about the durability of the floor so that you can avoid frequent renovations. Also, talking to a good experienced contractor will help to ensure that you get the best floor for your business premises.

Plumbing Tips To Avoid Embarrassing Woes

Plumbing Tips To Avoid Embarrassing Woes 1Photo Courtesy: Scott Feldstein

Last night, I had a dinner party at my house! The entire ambience was created, lawns were set up beautiful, tables were set right, guests had arrived, drinks were served – everything was going as per the plan and the party was one of those perfect get-togethers to remember. But suddenly after ten minutes, it was a bolt from the blue – the toilet overflowed.

Have you also been into a similar situation before? This plumbing disaster was enough to put a damper on a perfect evening fun. To help you avoid any such embarrassing woes, I have compiled some plumbing related tips that you should consider in order to avoid the calamity that ruined my party last night.

Clogged Kitchen Sink

Clogged sink is a common problem, especially when guests are in town and a feast is planned for a humungous crowd. We all are aware that food wastes like starchy vegetables, coffee grounds and cooking oils etc. can lead to a backed up sink.

Plumbing Tips To Avoid Embarrassing Woes 2Right: Justin describes what happened at a BBQ get-together:

“The garbage disposal in the sink gave out just as the party started. The drain totally clogged, the sink non-functional! We still had the bathroom, but still a kitchen sink is a key ingredient for a BBQ.

I took the pipes apart myself, worked to fix them with limited success. Edwin was walking by the house and agreed to get his plumber’s snake and run the problem down.”

Photo & Story Courtesy: Justin Hall

But how do we prevent this?

Always encourage your guests to flip the bin and throw the waste therein. Also, let the water run for min 10-15 seconds continuously before and after using the disposal as this helps the food carve its own way down through the main line.

However, mistakes do happen and controlling the activity of each and every guest all the time would be an unrealistic task. So, if you end up with a clogged sink, just don’t panic. There are a few steps that you can try out before dialling the emergency plumber’s number.

  • In case the garbage disposal is completely backed up, then let the sink drain out totally. It might take quite a while but have patience! Thereafter consider putting in some ice cubes into the disposal and let the cold water run through by turning the disposal on. Ice cubes are considered as very abrasive elements and hence might just do the wonders by breaking up the mess.
  • Alternatively, you can also consider pouring hot water down the sink.

Bathroom and Toilet Woes

To avoid the situation that I was into, consider these tips and avert the situation before it happens to you.

  • Try and ask your guests strictly not to flush any sort of garbage down the toilet, like paper towels, baby wipes or sanitary napkins. These solid wastes cause a blockage in the toilet area and lead to embarrassing toilet woes. Also just DO NOT forget the plunger. Minor toilet clogs can be easily fixed using the standard plunger. In fact these plungers work well even for the shower clog woes.
  • Stuff like hair etc. can easily block the shower drains and create hassles for the user. This occurs the most when the number of people at home increases. Here the best idea is to consider investing in a drain auger. A drain auger, also known as snake, is made up of a bendable cable which can go down into the drain and clear the clog.

So, instead of getting mad on your friend Joe for throwing the potato peels down the sink disposal, try out the above mentioned tips and technique and enjoy a woe-free party.

What Every DIY Enthusiast Needs To Know About Roofs!

So, you’re thinking of putting a new roof on your house – are you? Well, you are very brave! While reroofing a house is not for the faint-hearted, it can also be very satisfying and save you a lot of money. So it pays to get it right really, doesn’t it?! There are experts out there who can do it for you but if you think you know a thing or two about DIY then you may be contemplating doing the job yourself.

Before you get stuck in, it’s important that you really think it through. And it all starts with deciding which material to opt for. There are many ways to reroof a house – make sure you choose a way that will suit your house. In this article we’ll list the common types of roofing material so you can start to consider which will be best for you:

Tiles

Tiles cost a lot more than other sorts of roof material but they last a lot longer, so take this into account when you are looking at costs. Roof tiles look stylish and are in keeping with older looking houses. Tile is extremely economical in other ways too as it is so efficient at insulating. They are weather-proof and waterproof but they are not for walking on! It’s an expensive choice but one that will keep your house looking beautiful for many years to come.

Flat Roofing

Used more for garages and industrial units, flat roofs are a cheap and easy option to keep your unit weatherproof. They are layers of molten asphalt and covered with a membrane of plastic or rubber. They’re not beautiful, and they do have a reputation for leaking more often than other materials, but they are relatively cheap and easy to fit. But you’ll need an expert.

Thatch

Thatched roofs set off any house beautifully, but they come at a price! They are very expensive to install (and have to be done by an expert). There’s no doubt that they add charm to any house; however, the main drawback apart from the price seems to be that they are very flammable, therefore increasing your risk of a house fire. Those with thatched roofs have to make sure they have a robust evacuation procedure in case of fire.

Aluminium

Aluminium roofs are durable and weather resistant and are becoming a more and more popular choice.  Aluminium doesn’t warp, rust or crack and it is not flammable, meaning it is very safe. If you live in an area which is prone to hailstorms then it’s a great choice and if you live on the coast then the aluminium won’t be corroded by the salty air. It’s a very lightweight material and quite cheap to install.

Whichever method of roofing you employ, it’s vital that you get it right the first time unless you want years of repair works and bills ahead of you. So spend some time researching and deciding on which material is right for you and then only get roofing!

Decorating Tips That Won’t Cost The Earth

Decorating Tips That Won't Cost The Earth 1If you are a music fan and tinker with guitars, it would be nice to use the Beatles theme to decorate a room. Photo Courtesy: Maegan Tintari

With the recession tipped to go triple-dip, most home owners and tenants alike are keeping their heads down when it comes to home decor. The cheap charity-shop dining table and bargain-basement drapes will have to suffice another year as we strive to prioritize our expenses.

But just because the purse strings are kept tight, doesn’t mean you have to give up the idea of decorating your home altogether. It’s amazing what a bit of spray paint and some old jars can do to supe up your window sill. Start browsing the internet for DIY home decorating tips and you’ll find a plethora of blogs just waiting to inspire like ISpydiy.com and Designsponge.com . While there are loads of websites offering more eye candy than anything else, here are some pocket-friendly and above all practical tips, to get you started on your next interior design project.

Make a move

Here’s a tip that simply requires you to work with the materials already at your disposal and work up a bit of a sweat in the process. Merely reassessing and rearranging your existing furniture can revolutionize both how you perceive and use a space. Try ‘zoning’ a large space with strategic placement of tables or screens, or create a streamline through a smaller area by shifting sofas or shelving.

Book some DIY

Some skills are undeniably the preserve of the professional tradesperson, but there remains some handy work that is easily undertaken by anyone with patience and a bit of determination. From adding plaster cornices to distressing furniture, upholstering a set of second hand chairs or simply putting on a fresh coat of paint, doing it yourself is half the fun.

Use your local library and check out trusted guides from the likes of Reader’s Digest, which generally come good on their grand promises to make you able to tackle almost any DIY job you’d care to turn your hand to. Comprehensive rating magazines such as ‘Which?’ are also worth referring to before you make any equipment purchases.

In the frame

Beg, borrow or steal a selection of mismatched picture frames, the more ornate the better. Spray paint injects a speedy, foolproof dose of unifying colour- try glossy white or matt black finishes for effective results. Fill your frames with mirrors, inexpensive posters or prints, or the digital images that otherwise never leave your memory card. Simply hung empty, a collection of smaller frames acts like jewellery for a bare expanse of wall.

Reflected glory

Maximising light maximises your perception of space. Introducing mirrors makes a room appear larger and bounces every ounce of available light around, meaning cramped areas feel brighter and more spacious. It may be only an illusion but it’s a particularly effective one. Enhance the effect further by replacing plain light bulbs with those suited to the space – creating the effect of ‘soft candlelight’ or ‘daylight’ as appropriate, does wonders for the ambience of a room.

Light up a room

Trinket or jewel-laden chandeliers are no longer the preserve of the well-padded of pocket. The high street has hijacked the ‘statement lampshade’ market with great success, well-versed in a wide range of inexpensive, attractive options that can provide an excellent centrepiece and talking point. For a simpler statement that’s just as effective, globe-shaped paper shades and freestanding lanterns cost next to nothing and create a gorgeous glow in any room.

Colour on the cheap

Stick to a neutral colour for the bulk of a room. White and the dreaded magnolia are always the cheapest options, but are easily lifted by the purchase of a few tester pots of more interesting offerings used to pick out details and break up banality. Either mix and match contrasting colours within a room, or pick one and buy in a selection of tonal shades through your chosen hue’s spectrum.

Wallpaper – read all about it

Decorating Tips That Won't Cost The Earth 8

If the wallpaper you love is pricey, don’t despair. Intricate designs look smart restricted to a single wall, or even used to highlight a smaller feature such as a recessed alcove or chimneybreast. Decide how much you can afford, and choose your placement accordingly. For completely unique wallpaper, scour charity shops for old maps, or paste up pages from a classic book or musical score. Don’t forget – all those designer papers take their inspiration from somewhere.

Celebrate your clutter

De-cluttering isn’t always a viable option and, indeed, it’s the possessions we’ve amassed that define us. By all means, pick and choose the prettiest and stash the rest, but don’t feel everything needs to be hidden away. Remember the key rule of displaying objects in odd numbers, then round up vases, boxes and crockery into mismatched groups. Hang favourite textiles on the wall or use as throws. People pay a fortune for ‘library’ wallpaper – why not just use real books?

Eye of a magpie

Consider the fine details. Steal style from friends’ homes, TV shows, museums and public buildings, even the catwalk. Buy cheap, standard-issue furniture and personalize it by distressing, repainting, or customising with decoupage. Replace bland handles with odd vintage ones or coloured Perspex ‘diamonds’. Mismatching doesn’t matter – indeed, it creates a bespoke, designer feel. The same goes for replacing a set of crockery or kitchen chairs. Sometimes, ‘odds’ are even better.

The element of surprise

Just because it says ‘bathroom unit’ doesn’t mean it won’t work in the kitchen. And vice versa, fruit and vegetable trolleys make great tidies for toiletries. Never be a slave to suggestion. It’s your home, and you know what works where. March to your own (off)beat. An ornate grandfather clock in the kitchen can surprise and delight; a utilitarian filing cabinet in a bedroom is practical and quirky; an antique chair next to a freestanding bath is eccentric, yet may actually become quite essential.

It’s the selection process and an ability to put things together that really sets a home apart. Expensive designer furniture and decorating services are just lazy ways to get someone else to put the style into your home. There’s no need to raid your bank account to fund your latest home decor project – the only place to raid in most cases is simply your imagination.
