When you’re planning a house move, there is an awful lot to think about. Many people employ the services of a moving consultant to help them tie all the logistics together, and this is a great idea if you have the room in your budget. Of course, your removal company will help you to plan too, but there are many things that they can’t help you with, and a consultant will be able to take all of these into account.

You will be worrying about re-schooling your children, moving your pets and how to fit into your new community. But have you considered what damage could occur to your large household objects if they are not moved in the correct way? Many an antique sofa or a beautiful piano has been damaged beyond repair during a house move – there is so much scope for damage both in the lifting and shifting, and also the transit. Here is how to make sure your large household items get delivered in one piece:

Plan the Move Carefully

Your removal company will be well versed in moving furniture, but make it as easy for them as possible. They should start with the large items and then fit in the boxes and miscellaneous items around them. So they will need to get the big things out first. You can help them with this by making sure the boxes are stacked in another room. Not only will they be able to gain clear access to the large items of furniture, but they will also get a clear route out, without tripping over the boxes. You should aim to have rooms completely empty of everything but furniture when the removal men arrive so they can get straight on with the job.

Oversee the Move

Although the removal company will know exactly what they are doing, you should still be there to oversee the move. Make sure large items are covered in dust sheets so that grubby hands don’t mark them. Help the removal men out wherever you can (and stay out of their way when you can’t!). One thing is for sure – they’ll be grateful for a cup of tea/coffee – so be on hand to provide them with refreshments.

The Transition

The removal men will know to secure large items while they are in transit so they don’t fly about in the back of the van. It will really help them out if they know which room the furniture is going to go in once they reach the new house, so label everything accordingly. That will save a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and will also make sure that you don’t need to shift furniture around again once you’re there.

Planning a house move is a very big operation, but with enough thought beforehand, you can make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. You will certainly appreciate this once things are in motion – you will find the whole process a lot less stressful and you’ll be able to fit into your new life a lot more readily.
