Interior Design – Styling Themes to Consider in Your Home

Interior Design - Styling Themes to Consider in Your Home 1

When you are styling your home, you will want to work with a few guidelines as otherwise, the varying things that you can do are way too wide to choose from! Whilst thinking primarily about what you already own by way of furniture, as well as the size of the place, you should be sure to have a decent overview of the general direction that you want to be going in with the style that you end up using.

Striking a Balance

Whether you decide to deck out your home with Amazonian prints, or full on Gothic color schemes throughout, it is essential that you don’t overdo anything to the point of extremes, nor that you mix things in a way that does not make sense in terms of style, color or material.

While it is impossible to teach good style and taste through words, it is certainly possible to give a few pointers as to things that are worth keeping in mind when you are thinking about doing up the interior of your home. Have a look over the following ideas to see if they might fit with your house.

Color Blocking

Color blocking is an interesting way to approach the look of your house. If you already have furniture that has a solid sense of color across it, then you should perhaps use this as your starting point, and make sure that things feel like they match it in that way.

Should you have a plain color sofa or arm chairs, then you are off to a good start, as matching patterned things can be difficult. The same goes for curtains, and any other material that takes up a large amount of surface in the room. If you have the furniture and floor surface in place, have a think about the relationship between them. Are the colors warm or cold? Do the materials appear to work together?

If you have warm colors and textural materials, then you could go with a colder feeling wall color to offset that, giving the room interest, without sacrificing the warmth of the themes that you already have in there. However, if the sofa is white, and the floor is white, then a warmer wall color and some more painterly art work could be a nice way to bring some life back into the room.

That said, you can always go full on with the feel that you have; many people love a stark and minimal feel, whilst others love the place to simply feel really cozy!

Basing Your Decision around Pattern

Pattern is an interesting thing to base your decisions around, as you don’t want everything to match entirely – though you don’t want it to be too disparate! So, think about what makes the pattern that you already have, work, in your mind; is it floral and ornate? Is it linear and geometrical? Geometry works well with other geometry if it is in the same vein, but overdoing it can be a nightmare.

Floral patterns are generally terrible together as they are so busy looking, so if you have a favorite pair of floral curtains, keep everything else in the room pretty sober. That said, the chance to redesign your home only comes once every so often, so it may be time to chuck out the floral curtains once and for all. You may find that you like the replacements even better!
