Magnificent Marble In Your Home

When you think about luxury homes and their expensive furnishings, marble comes to your mind instantly. It is such an elegant and beautiful substance that it is hard to believe that it comes from the ground beneath our feet. Marble has been used for palaces and buildings of great importance for many centuries.

In recent years it has become more accessible for us mere mortals, and now you are able to buy the marble in slabs, and shape it for your own use. It is not an easy material to work with and here we look at the various uses and applications you may wish to use it for.

Greeks And Romans, and You?

The period dramas on television always use a marble floor when they revisit Ancient Greece and Rome; it lends an image of luxury and classic style to any scene. In this day and age of fake wooden floors and plastic worktops, it is nice to see something a bit more permanent. But can you really work with such a material without the proper tools and a lot of expertise?

Marble – The Facts

Marble belongs to the family of stones known as metamorphic rock and it is made up from recrystallized carbonate minerals, usually dolomite or calcite. It is usually used for sculpting statues and in the building trade. White marble is generally used for sculptures and tends to give off a waxy look which lends ‘life’ to the finished article.

The construction trade uses a mixture of calcite, dolomite or serpentine. This type of marble is much easier to polish. Pakistan is the chief exporter of marble, at over 100,000 tonnes per year. China is the largest importer worldwide and imports nearly 70,000 tonnes per year.

In Your Home

Whilst marble is undoubtedly a beautiful material to look at, it is far from perfect as a building medium. Although extremely hard and vitreous, it can also suffer from scratches quite easily. Unlike its bedfellow, granite, marble is quite delicate in terms of resistance. However, it can be used as a countertop if it is treated and sealed correctly.  Usually a homeowner will consider the practical issues of marble and compare these with the class and beauty on offer. As you can imagine, the form beats function most of the time in this equation!

Marble Walls

Magnificent Marble In Your Home 6

A marble wall is something to behold; they really add so much to the overall ambience of whatever room they adorn. The scratch issue is not pertinent in this case, and the stunning colors and shades are unmatchable as a wall medium. I’m sure there will be a plastic facsimile of marble walling one day, but that is all it ever will be.

Marble Floors

If you are thinking about a marble floor, it is really best to use the professionals to fit these. But you should think hard about the particular design you want. A lighter floor may seem very pretty, but a darker one will add warmth to the visual aspect. As marble is so expensive, it is a good idea to think about marble tiles for your floor. If they become damaged, you will only have a small piece to replace instead of the whole floor!

Home Improvement Ways Of Making Your Property Attractive

Having a home you love to come home to isn’t just about fancy decorations, expensive flooring and over the top electronics to entertain your guests. A great home can be created from the simplest of upgrades and changes. When your home looks and feels the way you’d like it to, there is something so powerful in that. Today we are going to discuss with you a few things that will help to keep your residence a place you can go to get lost in your thoughts and forget about stress.

Tidy Up: Outside

Your front yard is one of the first things you see when driving up to your home, and if it’s messy or unkept, this can instantly shoot your stress level through the roof. Instead of putting off mowing your lawn or taking care of those weeds that have grown through your walkway, take a moment to get started on the project now. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to walk through the entire space, but accomplishing something, no matter how small, is going to feel much better than accomplishing nothing at all.

The busiest areas of your home should be the places you put most of your energy into. For instance, do you have a lot of counter space but are barely able to see most of it? This can be a problem. Not only does this make cooking meals a much more difficult experience but this also takes away from the beauty of the room.

When you arrive home from the grocery store, instead of placing food on the counter and leaving it there, do your best to place things where you want them to go. If you aren’t sure where certain items will work best, have an area of the counter that you can come back to, just don’t get into the habit of leaving them there for extended periods of time. Habits are tough to break, but with determination, these kinds of things will become second nature to you.

Create a System and Stick to It

Just like it’s important to keep up with the exterior appearance of your home, it’s equally as important that you keep a close eye on the inside of your home. It can become extremely easy to get caught up in how tired, overworked or completely overwhelmed you are, but discipline can help alleviate all those feelings. Walking into a room that is organized, easy on the eyes and clean can make you feel surprisingly more at ease, no matter what may be going on in your life.

Instead of letting the trash pile up and waiting until the last day to take it out, make it a point to carry it outside. This way, it’s out of sight and can become ‘out of mind’. Have dishes that need to be cleaned? Instead of tossing them in the sink to be dealt with later, wash them right away and let them dry. Or, place them directly in the dishwasher. Having less clutter and items on your daily to-do list is going to make you feel much better.

Presentation Means Everything

Many people get caught up in the trap of not changing out of their night clothes or doing their hair if they aren’t leaving the house. While this may not seem like a very big deal, there’s something so empowering about getting up, having a daily routine and taking the time to give yourself a little TLC. Allow yourself the luxury of selecting an outfit you like, even if you aren’t going to be leaving the house all day. Take that quick shower instead of waiting until you’re exhausted later in the evening. Make your bed. Open up those curtains to let the sunshine in and do anything else that makes you feel motivated. Maybe this means drinking that daily cup of coffee and giving yourself 10 minutes to veg in front of the television.

What does this have to do with your home being attractive? Well, when you feel and look good, you instinctively take care of your home and your home looks nice. It’s also much easier to take on any stress that may come your way during the upkeep of your home when you are feeling fresh and confident. A nice presentation of your personality and home go hand in hand.

Have Some Fun

While it’s important to keep up on your household chores and daily tasks, it’s equally important to give yourself some time to relax. Reward yourself by watching a movie or taking a warm bath (without looking at the clock, for once).

Trying to cram too much into every single day of your life can make everything more complicated, reducing your quality of life. It’s amazing what a few minutes of relaxation can do. Don’t feel you have enough time for fun? Schedule the little things, such as walks, into your to-do list. May not seem like a big deal now, but you’ll thank yourself later. All work and no play definitely isn’t a good way to stay energized and motivated and those are the keys to make you keep improving your living space – your lovely home.

5 Ways To Set-Up Your Home For The Elderly To Live Independently

5 Ways To Set-Up Your Home For The Elderly To Live Independently 1Photo Courtesy: k4dordy

We’re living in special times because there are more people reaching old age than ever before. Compared to how many reached old age in the past, it’s a considerable difference. If you’re slowly getting older then congratulations, but there are a few things you need to think about. Once you start feeling your age, there is a good chance you might have to move into a care home because there is no way you can continue living alone when you can’t look after yourself.

Even if you have to move in with family, it’s not the same as living by yourself. Luckily, there is a way you might be able to keep your independence for longer. The reason it’s hard to look after yourself is because of the way your home is set-up, but if it was set-up differently it would make things a lot easier and day-to-day life would be great. If you want to stay independent for longer then look at some things you might want to think about in the future.

1. Add a Chairlift

You will need a way to get upstairs and you can’t rely on your legs carrying you up there forever. It’s far too dangerous anyway because if you were to fall you could cause yourself serious damage. If you have the money, it would be a very good idea to buy a chairlift. It means you could sit on it whenever you wanted to go upstairs and you could press a button to take you up. If you don’t have one you might not be able to use half of your home.

2. A Downstairs Bedroom

You will need to use your bedroom every day unless you plan on sleeping on the couch, so instead of having to make it upstairs you could just set up a bedroom downstairs. Once you are ready to go to bed at night it’s a lot easier and safer if you only need to walk into the next room.

Also, because you use your toilet multiple times per day, you should also have one built downstairs if there isn’t one there already.

3. Suitable Heating

5 Ways To Set-Up Your Home For The Elderly To Live Independently 4

When it gets cold in winter you want to make sure you’re as warm as possible. Lots of elderly people are affected by the cold each winter and if you don’t want it to happen to you there must be adequate heating. You don’t want an open fire because if anything was to happen, you might not be able to get out of the house quick enough. Have your central heating checked regularly to make sure it’s in good condition.

4. Keep Things Low

As your body gets older you’re not able to jump onto chairs to reach something from the top shelf anymore. If you did there is a big chance of injury and you don’t want to break anything because you’ll end up in hospital. The only solution is to keep everything as low as possible and you won’t even need to reach up high. You could maybe have your cabinets lowered so everything is easy to grab and you still have places to keep everything.

5. Lots of railings

When you are trying to walk around it helps if you have something to hold onto. You will definitely need something to help you up the front steps if you don’t have a ramp. Even walking around your home might be challenging, so having railings around the place will give you a chance to get some rest as you move between rooms. They can even help you to lift yourself up if you accidentally fall onto the floor, but you should have a buzzer near ground level anyway just in case.

How To Transform Your Home On A Tight Schedule

Do you find yourself coming home from work and no longer feeling the excitement you used to? Maybe you’ve become accustomed to those same four walls, the leaky faucet that never seems to get fixed and the curtains that clash with everything else in your bedroom. No matter how busy you may be, there are ways to get around to crossing items off the never-ending to-do list, known as life.

Time Restraints Don’t Have to Hold You Back

You may work a minimum of 5 days a week, find yourself constantly saying ‘yes’ to overtime and only have the vaguest idea what the definition of a ‘weekend’ is, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a home that you’re enthused to return to. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the daily tasks and find yourself putting off some of the most important things: such as cleaning your room or getting that laundry done that’s been staring you down for over a week. However, when you take on bits and pieces at a time, you’d be surprised how quickly progress is made.

Fact 2 – No one loves to do laundry!

Sure, the last thing you may want to do right after dinner is grab the laundry out of the dryer and fold it, but doing so is going to mean not worrying about it later. The same goes for those bills staring you down on your counter. Filing them used to seem easy, but now you’re just too tired to get the job done. When you have a moment, even just 2, begin the project. Having a cleaner counter is going to put your mind at ease, and give you one less thing to have to worry, or feel guilty about.

Using Your Vacation Time for More than Vacation

Getting time off from work is always nice, and it can be so easy to fall into the ‘I’m not doing anything other than relax’ trap. While it may not seem like it in the beginning, using even just a small portion of your time off in order to fix that broken tile floor, repaint your walls or clean up your yard is going to make going back to work much easier.

What we mean is – no one wants to come home to a messy environment. If you make changes, even minor ones, excitement will begin to replace dread.

Procrastination Leads to More Stress

If you haven’t already noticed, once the cycle of procrastination begins, it can feel as though you’ll never get out. The number of phone calls you have to make, bills you have to pay, carpets you have to clean or dishes you have to wash aren’t going to mysteriously disappear on their own (although we wish they could!). Treat today as the fresh start that it is. Cut yourself slack for the days you didn’t do anything and make it a point to fit these little tasks into your work week. Start with a timeframe that makes you comfortable and do everything in your power to stick with it. Don’t you just love feeling accomplished?

How To Find Great Deals On Home Projects: Quick, Useful Tips

How To Find Great Deals On Home Projects - Quick, Useful Tips 1Home Improvement Project – Photo Courtesy: Roanoke College

We know you’re in a rush (most of us are these days) but unless you take your time, you may actually be wasting a lot of money on your home improvement projects. Not only could you probably be doing some of the work for a much lower cost than you may have realized, but some tasks may even be projects you can take on solo or with the help of a loved one. A professional is nice to have around, but one is not always required.

Planning is the Trickiest Part and Most Crucial

How To Find Great Deals On Home Projects - Quick, Useful Tips 2 Planning beforehand is crucial – Photo Courtesy: Victor

It’s important to go at a steady, yet relaxed pace when approaching any project, especially those at home. Your home should be a place you like to spend your time, a place that you enjoy and are proud of. Improvements shouldn’t be something that one rushes into. Completing a job once is going to cost you plenty; no point in extending your budget by redoing something that could have been completed in one fell swoop.

If you’re not comfortable doing a project on your own, then make sure you are hiring someone trust worthy. If this individual is someone you know personally, take a look at their past work and experience and write up a contract if you feel necessary. This is going to ensure both parties are at an agreement. Within your written agreement, be sure to outline things such as payment scheduling, expected completion date(s) and anything else that may pertain to each specific task. While this often seems tricky to bring up to someone you care about, mention that it will protect both of you. Tough conversations are typically the best to have.

Hiring a Professional: What to Think About

How To Find Great Deals On Home Projects - Quick, Useful Tips 3

After a careful decision is made in choosing a professional, things start to settle down for your home improvement project. Photo Courtesy: The Tax Haven

If choosing a professional is more up your alley, then before signing anything, read every word within the contract (yes, that means the dreaded fine print so many of us like to avoid). You want to verify that the said company (or person) is insured, in the event that there is an injury on the job. Even if the job seems ‘simple’, accidents can still happen. Accidents do not avoid those who have the most experience or best training. They can literally happen to anyone, at any time. If the said person doesn’t have insurance, but you want to hire them anyway, verify that your personal home insurance will cover anyone who is injured on your property.

Never settle for the first person or company that you find, either. Take your time in shopping around; reading customer reviews, calling companies directly and even checking whether that business is affiliated with the BBB. Typically, the most expensive aspect of any job is the installation or labor.

Shopping Made Simple: Internet Benefits

Use the Internet to your advantage – Photo Courtesy: Jason Walton

While comparing local ads, calling and visiting various local shops can help you find great deals, there is an easier way. The great thing about comparing prices on the internet is you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to do so. Whether you are babysitting, trying to relax after a long day at work or bedridden; you are able to shop at your convenience and many companies (including Amazon) offer delivery, which makes the deal even sweeter. Getting those pieces of additional plywood you meant to have picked up earlier in the week, or paint for some last-minute touch-ups can be rush delivered in many cases. Oftentimes there are also special discounts that are only available to shoppers on the web.
